Is the Scout Association finally going into decline?
To boost membership a boy only group now admits girls, the guides do not admit boys. Is this a sign that to maintain a struggling membership they have had to resort to pinching children from other organisations.
Actually, the Boy Scouts of America is not admitting females into thier units. The BSA is a private organization, as are the Girl Scouts of America. In a sick twist of fate, the GSA will sue the BSA if they try to admit a female, and though I have not see it happen, I am sure the BSA would probably sue as well.
The Girls that you see with the Boy Scouts are part of an organization known as Venture Crews, which I believe is administered by the Boy Scouts at a District Level, and is for youth from the ages of 14-20.
I am a Cubmaster in Michigans Upper Penninsula, Cub Scout Pack 526. I had a mother approach me last may, and her 9 year old daughter wanted to join the Webelos I Den in my pack, I contacted our Council, and was pretty much told to F%@$ off, at the District level, my suggestion that we should never turn a youth away, they agreed with my way of thinking and then pretty much told me to F@#% off.
Never tell a Cubmaster no, because in the field, a Cubmaster is the ultimate authority, even over the Council, District, and parents. I submitted her application, and it was rejected, We cut the word “BOY” of of the uniform patch that says BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA, and set her up an escrow account, when she sold popcorn, we did not allow the Council to have thier 30%, we gave it to her to pay for awards, uniform parts, etc.
She went to the Summer Camp program, where she beat most of the boys in physical challenges, had to show a Boy Scout 3 years older than her how to tie a square knot, and she took Top sales in the Popcorn , First Aid Kit, and fire extinguishers, this February, the same people who fought me on this did an about face, and showed up when she participated in the Webelos II Crossover Ceremony, in Uniform, where she joined Girl Scout Troop 257.
Lets just call it the Scouts Of America
