Best Internal Frame Backpack?
Hello Everybody!
I will be going on a 10 day trek with my boy scout troop, at Philmont scout ranch, next summer. I have been told that I should probably look into an internal frame backpack, as they offer much more organization, and much more comfort. I am going to be about 14 at the time, but I am still a little small for my age, so I am looking for something smaller, but not too small. Remember, this will be 10 days, so I will be carrying essentials, such as clothing, tent, ground mat, and a few other items. If you guys could recommend something, that would be great! I am looking for anything, (name brands are a must) in the $100-150 dollar range. Thanks,

1 How heavy of a load will you be carrying?
Lightweight backpacking for 10 days could probably be as low as 30# including food and 2L of water. If you don’t have to carry food for all 10 days you could be under 25#
I could be wrong, but do the boy scouts require you carry certain gear?
If so- I doubt it will be at the lighter side of the spectrum. As such a EXTERNAL frame pack will be much more comfortable under a heavier load than any internal. Check out the Campmor website- they have youth sized external & internal framed packs. The externals are Jansport, Kelty and Outdoor Products and can be had for $50-100 bucks. My mother is on the smaller sized and uses one of these packs on the AT. Plus the frame spaces the pack off your back and it will keep you cooler as well.
If I was in the market for a good light weight pack however (capable of carrying #20-#25) I would look at the offerings of ULA or Granite Gear. Both make 50 liter packs under 2 pounds for about $100 dollars. These are the packs that long distance hikers are using, but again they have weight limits.
Using a large size internal 70-90 liters will just kill you.
If I was to take a chance, ordering something out of a catalog, without the benefit of trying it on a real hike, I would buy an external. Your chances of making a big error & being too uncomfortable will be less.
