Pinewood Derby
February 27, 2010 Beecher Center
Pinewood Derby is a racing event for Cub Scouts. Cub Scouts, with the help of parents, build their own cars from wood, usually from kits containing a block of pine, plastic wheels and metal axles.
The cars are powered by gravity and run down a regulation track. Every boy can design and build his own "grand prix" car to enter in the race. Pinewood time 9am check in. Races starts at 11:30am. Troop 40 will be providing concessions for purchase. The Potthoff’s have kindly offered their home for two "Build Days" to assist Scouts and their fathers. The dates are January 16th and February 13th from 10am– 5pm.

What is a Klondike Derby?
It is a Boy Scout Winter Skills and Camping event, held every winter in January. It involves an overnight
campout and multiple Camporee type competitions, where Boy Scout Patrols compete against
each other. Each patrol uses a dog type sled that uses Scout power to pull it instead of dogs.
This year the Scouts will be pulling their sleds loaded with their personal and patrol equipment to
help them win the events. (A checklist for each patrol/sled will be available after the December
roundtable?") The Scouts will also be using a map and compass to navigate themselves and their
sleds to their destinations where they will be tested on different Scout skills.
