Boy Scout Question: How do I stay focused on my trail to eagle?
Im a 7th grade, second class scout. Many of my friends in my patrol are at or in front of me in ranks. Whenever I begin working on rank advancements and merit badge requirements, I get distracted. I really want to become an Eagle scout because the past 3 generations of my family were eagles too. Whenever I ask them for help, they hardly ever do or don’t have the time. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Good to hear that you’re shooting for that goal.
Getting to Eagle…
(1) Review your Scout Handbook – go over the requirements you need to make First Class. YOu really don’t need to worry much about merit badges until after you get that rank. If you go to Summer Camp or a Winter Camp where merit badges are offered, great – but be sure to work on your Scout skills.
(2) Work on a couple of the ‘key’ Eagle-required merit badges, to get them started. In particular, get your First Aid MB, and start making records toward your Camping MB. Personal Management is a *big* one – and somewhat intimidating for a lot of Scouts. Get help from your family, and make contacts with other scout leaders that may be helpful – especially some of those that run their own businesses or are in banking or finance.
(3) Use your resources! Use your resources! Learn which Scout leaders in your own troop and in other troop know how to do…. whatever. Learn their hobbies, and ‘hot-buttons’ These are the people that can make your path to Eagle somewhat easier. Dr So-n-so flies model aircraft at a local RC field? Ask him about the hobby, maybe use him as a counselor for Model Building. Scout Leader Mr. J. is on the Parks and Recreation Committee? Maybe he can suggest a different place for your patrol’s next campout. Or maybe he can suggest a good service project that your troop can pitch in on.
(4) Make an achievement chart for yourself – put it where you can see it daily. List the achievements you need to get done (and note the ones that you *have* finished) Use this to help you talk with your Scoutmaster – for your Scoutmaster conference(s).
(5) If your father and grandfather (any uncles perhaps) made Eagle – ask them to go camping with you and your troop from time-to-time. Ask them if they would be willing to serve as merit-badge counselors for your troop for any badges. Its amazing how people can be brought into these activities, and will then dive in deeper and deeper on their own. And camping with your Dad or grandfather can be a great bonding experience (and they might even teach you a few things about the ‘good ol’ days”.
(6) Personal responsibility. No matter how much other people do or do not help you, or push you or kick your rear… the final responsibility for you making a success of your time in Scouting – lies with You. *You* have to push yourself.
