I want to quit girl scouts but I cant?
So I’m in 7th grade right now and I want to quit girl scouts but I cant. My best friend that Ive known since 1st grade made me join when I was in 2nd. We had a couple of problems with our old troop leader so now her mom is the troop leader. She put out $600 for this party we hosted but only 4 people showed up and our goal was to go to disney land in August but since we spent $600 on a party that nobody came to, her mom just paid it out of her own pocket and she said that she can just get reimbursed next year. There are only 5 people in our troop and that’s the minimum of people we can have so if I quit then we wont have ea troop anymore. I HATE being in it, I get made fun of at school and every single weekend I have to sell cookies or go to a stupid meeting and I cant do anything. (I haven’t done anything on the weekends for the last 2 months because of it) My best friend wants to quit also but her moms the leader so she cant either….. Should I quit?
You can quit if that’s really how you feel. Girl Scouts provides a lot of resources for leaders who are facing troop disbandment because of too few girls. Many service unit have waiting lists, so if you drop out, all the troop leader has to do is contact the service unit team and say she has an opening.
It sounds like your troop leader has done a very poor job of money management. Her service team would never have approved spending $600 on a party or fundraiser — she obviously spent this money without any approval from the volunteers she reports to. I tell you this because I want you to understand that the experience you have had is NOT what Girl Scouts is all about. Girl Scouts is supposed to be FUN – you should be going to day camps and summer camps, participating in badge days to explore all sorts of different careers, and deciding yourself, with your troop, what you want to do. In Girl Scouts, the girls themselves are supposed to decide, not the troop leader. So I hope you won’t think Girl Scouts is not worthwhile – it is, but not when you are in a mismanaged troop.
If you quit, I hope you will consider joining another troop next year, one that is more focused on what you want to do.
Regardless, I strongly encourage you to write a letter to your council office talking about your experience. They need to hear from you.
And when people outside of your troop or outside of Girl Scouts ask you why you quit, be diplomatic: do not complain about the troop leader. Instead, say, “I decided that there were some things I wanted to do and being in Girl Scouts took up the time I instead wanted to spend playing basketball/soccer/softball/whatever.
