Early Scouting As A Zerg
Scouting is extremely important to being able to win in SC2. The Diamond League players will alter build orders and their other Starcraft 2 tactics as they learn the moves their foe makes. If you truly want to become a Diamond League ranked player, you have to develop and eventually master your scouting skills. As an example, if you perform your spying the right way, you will be able to learn when your foe is attacking prior to them arriving, which will allow you to keep yourself secure and to get ready to retaliate. Scouting is particularly crucial for players of the Zerg species due to the fact that their units are so extremely focused. One excellent tactic is to constantly harassing your enemy as you scout him out. This strategy empowers you to examine the enemy forces while delaying them, and also lets you figure out which troops you should construct in order to counter-attack him. Mutalisks should be used together with Zerglings as a means of adequately harassing your enemy while you scout him out.Read the Zerg macro guide to learn how to use the info your spies have learned about most effectively.
By spying early on in the battle, you probably will not learn a lot about your foe’s technology tree. However it will allow you to discover if you are going to be ambushed early. For example, if you are scouting Terrans and they have a working Refinery up before they have built their Barracks, you’ll probably be attacked by Reapers. When you are scouting Protoss and you discover that they are finished with 2 Gateways, but their Cyber Core is not yet built, and they have absolutely no vespine gas available, you can be sure you are going to be attacked by a Zealot rush attack.
To make sure that you aren’t rush attacked have your Overlord do early spying, not your Drones. However, it can be a smart idea to deploy in a Drone scout if your Overlord is can’t discover the opponent’s base, particularly in close air positions with four player maps. One of the most useful tips that works against any race is to use a couple of drones to scout out the enemy headquarters early in the battle and check everything out. As soon as they discovered, create an extractor in your opponent’s headquarters. Whenever the opposing player is going to kill it, just abort it and spawn another one. The reason this is a smart move is because you make your opponent waste a lot of his gas and you inhibit the rate he can research his tech tree. Make certain to cancel your extractors fast though – if you don’t you will lose both the Extractor and the Drone (75 minerals total).
